The main character faced many hardships on his journey from Spain to Mexico. Going from 1st mate to Captain was difficult for him so it isn't really his fault that the ship ended up in the Gulf of Mexico in Texas. While in Texas they came into contact with the wrong Natives, because they took them captive for four years. If I was captive for any amount of time specially for four years I would be scared out of my mind. I bet he was especially because he was in charge of all the crew. Finally after being trapped for four years he and only four of his crew escaped. While trekking through the unknown territory they found a different group of Natives who were scared of them. So the four men and him took advantage of them and made the Natives help them navigate to Mexico. But these men being from such a far different place must have carried diseases with out knowing it, and the Natives who were not immune to these diseases got sick. The Natives thought that their getting sick was a curse from the men because they thought they had done something to make them mad. But the white men were not at all mad at them and nursed the natives back to goo health in order for his men and him to get to Mexico. I liked the apart where the white men helped the Natives get better, because they not only saw it as a benefit to themselves but also felt responsible to care for them.

The story about the Navajo Origin Legend is very weird and I did not like it very much. I personally I don't always like non-fictional stories or very unbelievable kind of story especially like this one. For the grizzlies to be punished and made into lesser creatues that couldn't speak or walk on two legs anymore. I don't have that much to say about this story and I am sorry about that but I just didn't like it at all.

The story of the Grizzlies Waling Upright seemed kind of weird to me, but as read on I began to like it more and more. My idea of the Sky chief is a symbol of God. The way he came down from the sky and began to touch here and there. Where ever his finger touched a tree grew. This is just oneexample of the many ways in which this Sky cheif like a symbol of God. When him and his family came to live down here on the Earth its as if he is enjoying what he created. But not like a king who would just control everything just like a person who built their own home just wants to appreciate the hard work they have done. When his daughter fell from the mountain and the Grizzlies took care of her and raised her as she was one of their own. When she is a young woman she marries one of the grizzlybears. Which to me seems very awkward because she is a human and he is a beas. But i guess you have to look at it in a different way to understand it. I thought it was very cute how they created new creatures and a pretty big deal , I mean they created a new kind of speicies! I didn't understand why they had to go to the Sky chief at all in the first place. They were happy and doing great so why would they want to ruin that. But over all i like this story because it was very interesting.

This idea that before the Earth existed there was only water is kind of not as impossible to believe as you think. At least I think it isn't because if you really look at a present day globe most of the planet is made up of water. So for the whole world to first exist as just a big ball of water doesn't seem so far fetched as it sounds. When the wife of the Skyland Cheif had the dream about uprooting the Great Tree and when they decided to actually uproot it, I thought it was the most stupid idea ever. Because in the story this tree is described as so great and beautiful , its four roots streched to each of the sacred directions, and from its branches all kinds of fruits and flowers grew. It sounds like this tree is very important to the Skyland society and for them to uproot just because the Skland Cheif's wife had a dream about it was stupid. In the end though it is actually a very good thing. After they uprooted the tree and the wife fell through the hole i thought she was just going to die. But out of no where these swans fly up and catch her not thinking of were they are goin to place her of course because if they had they wouldn't have even bothered to save her. This is because there is absolutley no land where they live, just water. When they caught her they gathered up all the other animals to figure what they were to going to do with the women. When the animals were conversing one of them knew that deep below the water was earth and so they all tried so hard to grab some earth but all fail. Exceot for the maby the smallest animal of them all the muskrat succeeded in getttin a peice of earh, which is ironical because he is the smallest and definitley not the most water animal there. I like that the author did this because usually the little guys never win, but in this story he did! The way the author explains his thought of the creation of the world is very interesting unique, not the same old bible of science explanation.

Assignment 9/17/09

When Columbus went to explore the new land, he found that everyone had just left without even taking their valuables and with out leaving any evidence behind. There was no signs of why they left, where they went, or why they left in such a hurry. Christopher Columbus came to America expecting to finad a settlement of people but instead he found no one or any sign of why they weren't there. If that were I would be scared and worried about my life becayse what it the same thing that happend to them could happen to me. At the same time I would be so into the beautiful, untouched, flourishing land that I'd forget about being so worried, almost like Columbus did. He was lucky to be so fortunate as to see and explore the new world. To experience that, would be so amazing to and I just wish I could've had that opportunity. When he met with the Natives he was veryrepectful towards their beliefs. You can tell he does when he said, " it was a great afflistion to me to be ignorant of their natures, for I am very certain they are all valuable." Columbus was a very smart man for being at peace with Natives and working together with them to help him survive in the new world. In this passage about Christopher Columbus I learned more about him than I knew bofore as a person not only what he accomplished.
