The main character faced many hardships on his journey from Spain to Mexico. Going from 1st mate to Captain was difficult for him so it isn't really his fault that the ship ended up in the Gulf of Mexico in Texas. While in Texas they came into contact with the wrong Natives, because they took them captive for four years. If I was captive for any amount of time specially for four years I would be scared out of my mind. I bet he was especially because he was in charge of all the crew. Finally after being trapped for four years he and only four of his crew escaped. While trekking through the unknown territory they found a different group of Natives who were scared of them. So the four men and him took advantage of them and made the Natives help them navigate to Mexico. But these men being from such a far different place must have carried diseases with out knowing it, and the Natives who were not immune to these diseases got sick. The Natives thought that their getting sick was a curse from the men because they thought they had done something to make them mad. But the white men were not at all mad at them and nursed the natives back to goo health in order for his men and him to get to Mexico. I liked the apart where the white men helped the Natives get better, because they not only saw it as a benefit to themselves but also felt responsible to care for them.
